HTML vs CSS

HTML (hypertext markup language) tells the website where to put things on the page for example make the title centered or the picture on the left hand side half way down the page.It is the building blocks of the whole website.

CSS (Cascading Stylesheets) is they styling and design of the website for example all links on this site will be blue or every title has size 42 font. The CSS is the design consultant when the site opens up every time, it tells the site how to appear.

Example of CSS code

h1 {

    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;

    font-size: 18px;

    font-weight: bold;

    color: #000000;

    }
h2 {

    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;

    font-size: 16px;

    font-weight: bold;

    color: #000000;

    border-bottom: 1px solid #C6EC8C;

    }

Privacy

  • Humans strive to get attention through Facebook and status updates, they want more comments to feel more wanted and socially stable.
  • We now feel comfortable telling the world everything
  • We don't care who reads or what their comments say as long as they commented
  • These comments drive us to tell the world more
  •  School Net security systems contradict their own existence by selling info to companies and dictatorships
  • Blocking/ monitoring net activity teaches students that trying to keep private is a bad thing and you should accept that someone needs to know what you are doing.
  • Feedback must be close to the attempt as possible, you want to do better immediately.
  • Games are popular because the result of your actions is shown to you as you play

Backups

Why backup? You back things up to safety proof them in case something happens to all the data you had stored such as it corrupts or is lost in an emergency such as a fire.

Backing Storage

Fixed hard disks are used in file servers and are online. Portable hard disks would be used for storing very large files that need to be transported from one device to another. Magnetic tapes are used for backups of file servers for computer networks. CD/DVD ROM are used because data can not be deleted off it whether it be accidental or on purpose. CD/ DVD R is used for the single burning of data. CD/DVD RW allows you to record over old data and update the information. DVD RAM is the same as DVD RW but allows for quicker access and can be overwritten more easily. Blu- ray has a capacity of about 50 GB, provides HD video and is used for storing films in high quality. Solid state backing storage is easily up datable and written and is more robust than other forms of storage. Pen drives can transport files and backup data from computer to computer. Flash memory cards are used in digital cameras, palmtops, mobile phones and MP3 players.

Twitter in Christchurch

In what ways did Twitter help people in Christchurch?
Twitter has allowed people trapped by rubble to tweet where they are and that they need help. For some people it saved their lives, for others it was their last few words- a tweet on twitter! People have also being allowed (through twitter) to let people in need of food, water and shelter to know that they have these sorts of resources either in their houses or warehouse. For example, a man tweeted that he had cartons of water in his warehouse and before long a hundred dehydrated people turned up in desperate need of water.

Quote examples of tweets that show the different uses.
1.       mairesmith: RT @WgtnCC: Plea for cash donations rather than donated goods for quake victims. http://bit.ly/hCi7fS #eqnz
2.       michellefeyen: RT @ShotbyRobins: Need to locate Emma Johnston and Shen Yi Luan, please RT #eqnz
3.       dmanww: RT @Jeramedic: CA-TF2 USAR has departed LAX enroute to #NewZealand. Estimated flight time of 13 hours on flight UAL9797 http://ow.ly/42ice #eqnz #LACoFD
4.       DerMoosealini: RT @nzherald: Teams from Singapore, Australia, the US, UK, Taiwan and Japan are sending help to Christchurch: http://t.co/zcfxxb6 #eqnz

How do people use the Twitter functions?
They use Twitter functions such as the hash key and searching. By using the hash it is immediate group that not only goes to your friends but the whole world. It is as democratic as possible. Through the search engines anyone can type in anything in the search bar and all the tweets using those words that you used to search will come up. You don’t have to be a member nor do you have to be friends with the people who made the tweets. It is fast and efficient and is an easy way to communicate to people across the other side of the world. For example a lady in Christchurch was stuck in traffic trying to reach her Dad’s home to make sure he was safe. She rang her sister in Auckland who rang the brother in San Francisco, who then tweeted if anyone knew if this person was alright at the certain address, within a few minutes someone on Twitter replied saying he was trapped in a car.

Why is Twitter good in a crisis?
You can communicate with the world if you have a hand held device either letting them know where you are or whether  you need help or not. Also it allows people to advertise for  food and water in an efficient and accessible way. Twitter allows for mass communication between large groups of people and you don’t even have to be friends with them. You can organise things much easier and get a greater understanding of what needs to be done. Countries from right around the world are able to see what is going on and therefore let people know of the help they are contributing towards the crisis situation.

Compare it with Facebook.
On facebook only your friends can see your status and you can only invite your friends to groups that you create. Yes this is more private which some may say is a good thing but it is also less open and global in the sense of trying to get a message across in the time of a crisis.

Powerpoint

Master slides only edit colour and style not what you writing says on every slide, if you want to add master text then you have to add a text box then edit the style in the text box.

Lesson of the day- 2/03/11

P.E. had to be my favourite lesson of the day. We were playing twenty20 cricket which was the sport I played during summer anyway so I was good at it. I got to bat and ball unlike most people so I was constantly involved in the activities.

I batted with my friend Seb Gould so it made batting a better experience along with being able to have fun with my mates while doing something that I liked as well. It was a win/win situation in which only the people who didn’t play cricket lost out. The fact that I was having fun meant I did well also scoring 16 runs off one over.

Microsoft Excel

  1. import: .csv (comma seperated value file)- standardised format. Save as Excel Workbook! Open all files!
  2. Absolute and relative cell references-Relative cell references are relative to where you are, the formula changes depending on where you copy and paste it and absolute means it will absolutely always refer to that cell.
  3. Named cells (absolute reference), named ranges (automatic reference e.g. naming list of marks as marks). It makes reading formula's easy. Rather than a whole lost of numbers.
  4. Sum, average, maximum, minimum, integer, rounding, counting, if, lookup
  5. Filtering (cutting down the information), perform searches using AND, OR, NOT, LIKE
  6. Perform searches using wildcards (*or anything)- Broadens searches
  7. Sort data
Notes

  • All formula's have equals sign, their name and brackets.
  • Click enter when naming cells

Input devices

Magnetic Stripe Readers: At POS terminals, ATMs and in security applications
Graphics Tablet: Inputting freehand drawings or retouch photographs
MICR (Magnetic ink character recognition):

OMR (Optical Mark Reader): Inputting pencil marks on a form such as a school register, candidate exam answers, any application involving input of a choice of options
OCR (Optical character reader): Inputting text to a computer ready for processing by another software package such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases etc.

Light Pens: Where desktop space is limited, it is used instead of a mouse or for drawing applications where a graphics tablet might be too big.

IGCSE Theory

Section 1

Hardware

The physical components of the system. For example a phone.

Software

Set of commands that are processed for an output. For example utility software which is used to change the system (control panel or system preferences). Application software such as Word Processing and Call of Duty. The operating system is also software, it is used so everything such as the printer and word can function and work together.

Components

Input devices: CPU (central processing unit), ROM (read only memory) is non volatile and is permanent, RAM (random access memory) holds what you are currently doing such as playing a game, it's continously changing and is volatile. RAM and ROM are primary memory, secondary storage is the hard drive.

Output devices: Printers such as laser.

Interface

GUI's (graphical user interface)  are WIMP's (windows, icons, menu's, pointers) and Command line interface.

Types of Computers

  • The big computer is called a mainframe used for bulk processing.
  • Palmtop otherwise known as a netbook is a small laptop.
  • Normal computer is a personal computer (PC)- desktop computer
  • Personal digital assistant (PDA). An iPhone without the phone.NOT a phone.
